Many of us suffer from poor posture.  Our jobs are mostly to blame for this, especially if our career has us sitting at our desks for a vast majority of the day.  We are forcing our hips into a fixed position that causes tightness in our lower back.  It feels better to lean forward in a hunched position than to sit up straight because our bodies have become accustomed to this way of sitting.

Over time, our backs become tighter and tighter, and this inhibits us from carrying on with daily activities.  We start to notice that things we used to be able to perform with little ease now poses a problem.

So how do we fix this? There several things you can start doing today that will help strengthen your back and change your posture for the better.  First and foremost, make it a point to get up and walk around from your desk and various points throughout your day.  Gradually switch out your desk chair with a stability ball, (that you would find from a Portland personal trainer) for an hour or so a day.  The unstable surface forces your body to constantly make adjustments while strengthening your hip and low back at the same time.  Last but not least, be mindful of your posture from the start to the end of your day.  Make sure your shoulders are pulled back and that you’re in an upright position.

Making these small changes will have you on your way to a healthier back in no time.
