More and more people seem to be getting interested in running and races.  Running is after all a great way to stay in shape, and signing up for a race is a great way to keep you accountable.

As Portland personal trainers, we find that many people who are new to racing are not prepared for the mental obstacles they will face.  For instance, in the beginning most people are feeling great.  They’re maintaining a good pace and feel that they can continue until the end.  Then another mile is under their belt and fatigue is starting to set in.  What is the most common thing that occurs once this happens? People give into their mind, believe that are tired, and they walk.

The problem with allowing yourself to do this is it opens the door for more walking.  You may say you’ll only walk for a minute or two and start back up, but it won’t be long until you find yourself walking again.

So how do we avoid this from happening? Simple. Don’t allow yourself to walk!  As tired as you may be, keep pushing yourself to the finish.  You’ll  be happy you did, and you’ll have a pretty impressive time to show for it.
